NEM is beyond a ‘non-profit corporate entity.’ It’s an idea, a vision carried by many. It’s the collective power of the people that engage it.

“History of New Energy Movement” by Jeane Manning

Physicist (and former member of the Apollo astronaut training program Brian O’Leary PhD and distinguished environmentalist Alden Bryant PhD met in California early in the 2000’s. Their conversation led to a citizens’ push for truly clean energy, the New Energy Movement (NEM).

Brian became president invited selected people to board of directors’ meetings at his home in southern Oregon, and a group mission statement evolved. Alden was vice-president. Alden’s health prevented him from being very active in NEM throughout the years, but we honor his contribution to its beginning. The New Energy Movement was officially founded in 2003, and five years later received the IRS Letter of Determination as a 501(c)(3) Public Charity.

NEM’s early activities included:

  • The 2004 public forum in Portland, Sept. 25-26, 2004, titled "New Energy: The Courage to Change”. Hundreds attended the talks at the two venues, Portland State and Reed College.

  • A NEM board of directors retreat in California that elected Joel Garbon as second president of NEM. (Brian O’Leary and his partner Meredith Miller had moved to Ecuador; Joel was Brian’s choice as well as the unanimous choice of the board.)

  • NEM’s co-sponsoring of a Conference on Future Energy with Dr. Thomas Valone’s Integrity Institute.

  • NEM’s involvement with the first Global Breakthrough Energy Movement conference, in 2012. That collaboration with our with European sister organization continues today, for Global BEM’s November 9-10, 2019 conference in the Netherlands.

  • Formation of New Energy Movement Canada in 2006 in Vancouver BC, resulting in two years of monthly public education events.

  • Publishing of Breakthrough Power as NEM's flagship education and media access tool.

  • Creation of the legislative draft Energy Innovation Act of 2007.

  • Numerous media and conference appearances by NEM executives and directors over the years.

  • Formation of a deep network of inventors and activists.

  • Passing the torch to the current president of the New Energy Movement, Susan Manewich.
